With basic sewing skills, this guide will walk you through our process of creating this sewn taffeta silk piece, ready to be tied into a magnificent bow.

Materials & Preparation

  • One piece of Silk & Willow taffeta silk (3 yards)
  • Measuring tape
  • Pins
  • Fabric marker or chalk
  • Sharp scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Hand-sewing needle and matching thread
  • Iron

Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps to craft your silk piece, transforming simple fabric into an object of beauty.

Step 1: Preparing Your Fabric
Begin by laying your taffeta silk flat. Measure 12 inches along the width of the fabric. At this mark, make a small, 2-inch cut. From this cut, gently tear the fabric along its natural grain. You will now have a piece measuring 12 x 36 inches.

Step 2: Folding and Pinning
Lay your 12 x 36-inch fabric piece on a flat surface. Fold it in half lengthwise, bringing the two long edges together. The fabric will now measure 6 x 36 inches. Carefully pin along the open edges to hold the layers in place for sewing.

Step 3: Creating the Angled Ends
To create the classic dovetail finish, fold a corner inward at one end to create a perfect 45-degree angle. Mark this diagonal line with your fabric chalk. Trim the excess fabric triangle, leaving a standard seam allowance. Repeat this process on the opposite end.

Step 4: Sewing the Seams
Using your sewing machine, stitch along the two angled ends and the long open side of the fabric. Remember to leave a 2-inch opening along the long side. This small gap is essential for the final step, an opening through which the piece will be turned right-side out.

Step 5: Turning and Finishing
Carefully turn the fabric right-side out by pulling it through the 2-inch opening you left. The sewn seams will now be neatly enclosed on the inside. Gently push out the corners to create sharp, clean points.

Step 6: Hand-Stitching the Opening
Once the piece is fully reversed, find the 2-inch opening. Neatly fold the raw edges inward, aligning them with the sewn seam. Using a hand-sewing needle and matching thread, close the opening with a discreet slip stitch.

Step 7: The Final Press
To complete your handcrafted piece, gently press it with an iron on a medium heat setting appropriate for silk. This will set the seams and give the fabric a crisp, polished look. Your silk piece is now ready to be tied into a magnificent bow.
